Dakota's Home: An update to his supporters

Dakota definitely knew his rescuers. Thanks to the dedication of WINC staff and volunteers Dakota was finally rescued on Wednesday morning. Upon his return home, Dakota was examined first by staff and then by his veterinarian. It was determined that he was very thin, having lost more than 25% of his body weight, very dehydrated and weak.

Due to his state, Dakota is being kept on cage rest under staff supervision.

While Dakota has made it through the first 48 hours and has not shown any decline in his condition, he still has a guarded prognosis. We can never fully know what he has seen and done over the past few weeks, but are providing him with the best care possible now that he is home.


It's clear he's exhausted and still easily stressed. Because of this and his need for fluids and medical care several times daily, we are not allowing any visitors, media, or photography that could cause him further distress.

Thank you, once again, to everyone for their thoughts and wishes for Dakota. As of today he is still being monitored by staff, and still an a fluid diet. Based on the care his vet has prescribed we will not likely have any significant updates on his condition until Monday.

    What a sweet thing. The pictures brought tears to my eyes....I'm so happy he is home and will continue to pray for a wonderful recovery. Please let us know if you are accepting donations for his care.

    Thank you for the pictures! It is great to see him. I have faith in everyone at WINC and Dakota that he will continue to do well. Over the past couple of weeks I have thought so much about him and hoped for a positive outcome. To me, he represents why it's so important to respect life....even owl lives. His life has been a voice for all wildlife and I am thankful that so many others feel the same. Keep up the great work WINC and Dakota....know there are so many people out there rooting for you!

    My thoughts and prayers are with Dakota for a full, speedy recovery. I have been so deeply touched and saddened since hearing he was stolen. I am elated that he has been rescued. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers that care for Dakota and all the wonderful animals at WINC.

    I am praying that Dakota gets better and stronger with each day that he is your kind and expert care. I am glad that he is in out of our now much colder weather! Take care you lovely soul.

    It is such a relief that Dakota was found and is now home. Everyone connected with his rescue must be congratulated! Such dedication and love for Dakota is truly a wonderful thing to see. Best wishes to Dakota as he recovers and to all of you at WINC as you continue your admirable work.

    I own parrots and I know a sick bird's body language. Poor Dakota, he sure looks stressed. I'm so glad he's home and being taken care of.
